My name is Kathy and this is where I hope to keep little creative tidbits, projects, ideas and more. I have no ‘formal’ art training, but I come by my love of all things fiber and paper naturally. My Mom taught me to make handmade paper as a kid, and I watched all of her weaving projects, rugs, sewing, and everything else she dabbled in with wide-eyed enthusiasm. Any mom who willingly encourages you to melt crayons is a good one in my book.
I live in New York, about an hour north of NYC, a suburb of Dallas, Texas with my husband and three cats: Stormy, Thunder and Lightning. We live in the top floor of a house built in the 1860′s with a view of the Hudson River a recently remodeled one-story ranch (yay!). My favorite parts are the glass doorknobs and old window panes tile floors (cat-proof) and the central A/C.
I started quilting around 1990 and love it more every day. Katie PM (and my fantastic classmate, Priscilla) set me loose in a whole new direction in 2006 at Quilting By The Lake and I haven’t looked back since. It was both an incredible ‘aha!’ and at the same time a giant DUH moment when I figured out that the handmade notecards I had been making (and selling when possible) for the last decade or so were — drumroll, please — my practice pieces. Before QBL I had never even done free-motion quilting — at last, I understood all the doodles I’d drawn in my life!
I sew on a Babylock Quilter’s Choice. For messy things or anything that might do damage, I pull out my old Elna Air Electronic SU. I also have a White Superlock 1934D serger. I hate handwork and love spray baste. I only pin something if my Mom’s going to see it. As of November 26, 2008, I also free-motion quilt on a Handi-Quilter Sixteen Sit-Down. It is a fantastic improvement for my shoulders, neck, and productivity!
I work in the themed environment/entertainment industry and have two religious studies degrees. Go figure. I have a raging sweet tooth, a dangerous obsession with sudoku, and I can’t believe I agreed to have all these cats who refuse to help out with the housework.
